Where to Eat
There’s a thriving restaurant scene in Deptford that offers a taste of old and new that you just don’t find in other parts of London. Take a walk through the neighbourhood and you get the impression that eateries aren’t afraid to try something a little bit different to entice customers through their doors – and it seems to go down well with the locals.
There’s quirky street food at the bustling Deptford Market and inviting eateries serving local produce in the Market Yard. If coffee is your thing, then you’ll be spoilt for choice by the line-up of independent coffee houses serving superior cups, many of which offer spaces to plug in your laptop and crack on with some work.
In Deptford, there’s plenty of places to choose from when it comes to dining out, and everything is right on your doorstep – so you won’t have to walk far to find the place for you.
This 19th century Victorian corner pub is located next to the Brookmill Park. It hosts a comedy night and a quiz night every Tuesday and serves up a top notch selection of food and drink. There’s a beer garden for the warmer months, craft ales from local boroughs, cocktails and a food menu filled with tempting pub classics. Keep your eyes peeled for chef residencies which are often announced on their social channels.

Friends and founders of the Dirty Apron, Suzie, from Peckham, and Holly, from Deptford, know the area – and they know what the people of Deptford want to eat. It started out as a supper club and then toured the country serving street food. Market Yard is now its home where you’ll find a seasonal menu that changes weekly, serving breakfast through to dinner. For a weekend treat, try the traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings – the taste of Sunday on a plate!

If you love Italian food, Marcella is for you. It’s the little sister of Peckham’s critically acclaimed Artusi, which has helped to put Peckham on the food map. Now Marcella is working its culinary magic for the people of Deptford. With a menu using seasonal produce that changes throughout the week, accompanied by a thirst-quenching all-Italian wine list, it’s a little slice of Italy on Deptford High Street. We recommend a plate of paccheri pasta served up with traditional lamb ragu. Yum.

Fancy a taste of Jamaica? This buzzing restaurant and bar is spread over two railway arches and offers up Caribbean delights right under the platforms of Deptford rail station. One arch serves as the bar and restaurant while the second is a gallery and creative space. Fun, friendly and bursting with flavour, the menu changes to suit the locally sourced ingredients. The staple crowd-pleasers are jerk and curry and the cocktail list is dripping with rum-infused cocktails. A winning combination.

Sometimes only a burger and beer will do. On these occasions, head to Hanks. The menu has burgers to suit everyone, both meat-eaters and vegans, and there’s American-style craft beer on tap from nearby Bianca Road brewery. Hanks is a familiar face on London’s street food scene, having started out on a monthly pitch in Deptford’s Giffin Square in 2014. Deptford’s Market Yard is the first permanent home for Hanks and is definitely worth a visit.
