Top outdoor social spots near Deptford apartments

For many of us, socialising at a distance in the great outdoors has become the norm during the pandemic and with the lines between leisure and work time blurred, we’ve come to rely on nature to help ground us. At Deptford Landings there’s an abundance of nearby parks and walks to help shrug off the doldrums of the day. We’ve come up with our top three places to meet friends al fresco near our Deptford apartments. . .

Greenwich Park

Just a 12 minute cycle from Deptford Landings apartments, beautiful Greenwich Park is one of the largest open green spaces in south-east London, offering impressive views over the Thames, the Isles of Dogs and the City.

Originally the site of an abbey, the land has been cultivated and built upon by monarchs since 1427. Henry VIII introduced deer for hunting and also used the vast swathes of heathland for hawking. A small collection of deer is still maintained today in an area to the south east - see if you can spot them on an early morning jog.

Speaking of fitness, the park has a long sporting history, used for Olympic Equestrian events, cycling races and is a popular feature on the London Marathon course. For those who are serious about getting fit, you can sign up for military-themed fitness classes but they’re not for the faint hearted!

For those of a more leisurely disposition, Greenwich is open year-round as an inclusive, accessible place to meet your friends and family for picnics or to soak up some history on a sunny afternoon.

Canada Water

Canada Water tube, Overground and bus station make the freshwater lake an easily accessed place to meet loved ones outdoors, and for those at Deptford apartments it’s just a pleasant 20-minute walk from your front door.

The lake is named Canada Water after the former Canada Dock, which was used by ships sailing from the country itself. After the closure of many docks in the ‘70s and ‘80s, the city invested heavily in the area converting much of the lake into a wildlife refuge and outdoor public space. These days, the area is enjoying redevelopment, with new cafes and restaurants planned around the lake in a step to establish a traditional town centre feel for new and existing residents. While you wait for the eateries to open, you can enjoy walking round the lake spotting interesting birds and plant-life.

Pepys Park

As the borough’s only riverside park, Pepys is a popular place to walk the dog and meet friends for sporting or social activities.  At just 10 minutes’ walk from Deptford Landings, it’s a perfect spot to spend evenings with friends watching boats on the river as the sun goes down, and the impressive views of the City beyond.
