Deptford Market Yard – South East London’s historical gem
Right on the doorstep of our new flats in Deptford, you’ll find Deptford Market Yard. Located right next to Deptford station, it was awarded the title of “Best Heritage Led Project” at the 2017 London Planning Awards.
The 14 arches, which made up the old railway viaduct in Deptford Market Yard, were originally used to store horses and carriages, but have now been brought back to life. The new reinvigorated space was carefully designed to celebrate the local community’s creativity and diversity. Local shops, makers, cafes and restaurants are now nestled within the arches, creating a unique space to enjoy within easy walking distance of your new Deptford flat. Take time to explore and walk along the carriageway above the arches of Deptford Market Yard. Or visit one of the shops and cafes who now call the arches their home.
Once you’ve explored Deptford Market Yard, it’s only a short stroll on to Deptford High Street. Spend some time soaking up its atmosphere and browse its selection of shops, including the historic family pie shop Manzes. Established over 100 years ago, it’s worth a visit to taste their legendary east end fare, including mouth-watering pies, mash, green liquor and eels. There are also a variety of local cafes where you can grab a coffee on the go or a bite to eat.
The history of Deptford High Street stretches back to the times of William Shakespeare, and it’s often regarded as one of South London’s most iconic and loved high streets. Deptford was once home to dockyards, and that’s the reason the ‘Deptford Anchor’ was located on the High Street until recent times when it was removed. Today, Deptford High Street is a thriving community of traders, locals and market stall holders. It’s also testament to the diversity in South London, with people trading, living and working together from all different backgrounds.
Douglas Way market is famous for its bric-a-brac with a wide variety of new and second-hand goods. It’s said that unique finds such as vintage record players and antique silverware have all been found on previous Deptford market days so browse the hidden treasures on display – you never know what you’ll discover!
Once you’re settled in your new Deptford flat, be sure to check out Deptford Market’s opening times – at the time of writing, it’s open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am until 5.30pm. On Deptford market days, the High Street is closed to traffic from 6am to 7pm which gives you the freedom to peruse the wonders on offer at your leisure.
